Martin Luther King Jr. Day

In the USA we celebrate peace day on the 21st of September, but in January we celebrate a man who was a civil rights leader in the USA. His name was Martin Luther King Jr. He fought for the rights and the equality of african american's in the USA. In this way children in America celebrate some of the same ideas about peace as children in Spain. We celebrate this holiday by learning about Kings efforts to bring justice to all people in the USA and usually read his famous speach called,"I have a dream." His famous line, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character," still resonates today. Schools across the country take advantage of this time of year to teach students about Martin Luther King Jr., the civil rights movement, and the importance of racial equality. People also celebrate this day by serving people who are in need, conducting parades, or planning activities.
